Regardless of who forms government in Victoria, and it looks increasingly like it will be the Coalition, the best thing about the election result is the shellacking copped by that amalgam of old hippies, middle-class airheads and mad Marxists.
THE Greens failed to win a single lower house seat.
Andrew Bolt succinctly summarises the disastrous outcome for the Greens:
- This election could be the Greens’ retreat from Moscow, and not just in Victoria. They cockily speculated about winning four or even five seats, on the back of polls which a month ago had them pulling around 18 per cent of the vote. They finished with no seats, and less than 11 per cent of the vote. Worse, their hype has been exploded and momentum reversed. The Liberals’ strategy of putting them last on their how-to-vote cards pricked their balloon, as well as helped the Liberals define themselves better – and this will probably be a strategy now followed by Liberal parties around the country. Labor, having been wedged as too close to the Greens who actually threatened their seats, now sees the Greens’ menace more clearly, and will have more courage to take them on after this, too. Again, I think this other state Labor parties will now feel the same, and discuss putting the Greens last, too, to erase them from Parliament before they get too strong.
