Trained observer   2/7/2004

Look at this and read this by left-leaning Sydney Morning Herald reporter Paul McGeough…
He was clean-shaven – the fugitive’s beard of December had been sculpted back to his customary moustache.
And ask: Have jobs been lost? Will Media Watch pay this any attention?
My money’s on the double negative.

Rover madness

Nearby coastal town Torquay is the home of Victorian surfing. It therefore has its share of dope-smoking wave riders prone to idiotic acts.
A local vet has reported that stoned dogs and cats have staggered into his surgery bearing strange facial expressions, over-reacting to noise or movement and alternating between states of excitement and sleepiness.

Frank and forthright

Beautiful to behold. Editors’ editor Frank Devine has drawn, quartered, skun, gutted and diced two days of ABC news in a style which should make any professionals left at Aunty cringe to their bootheels.
Excerpt:

“Russian President has revealed new intelligence claiming that Saddam Hussein’s regime was planning to strike the United States … For President George Bush the revelation may come as a relief.”
Delete second sentence. Unsupported, not to say air-head, speculation.
“Just hours after the Russian President’s statements [Bush] made a campaign stop to again tell troops Saddam was a threat.”
Delete “campaign”. The Democratic Party hasn’t even chosen its nominee yet. Anyway, commanders-in-chief have other reasons to visit troops than to canvass their votes. Replace “was a threat” with “had been a threat”. Saddam is in prison.

It’s hard to know what’s worst: their ideologically-driven distortions or their ignorance of basic facts.
Best of all, Frank promises more.

Even money

QUIP of the day from a remnant of long-ago talent show winners The Music Men who called 3AW this morning to report:
The good news is that Saddam Hussein is gonna face the death penalty.
The bad news is that David Beckham is gonna take it.
